Don't Get Left Behind!
Today's workplace looks dramatically different than it did just a few years ago. Technological advances have and will continue to have a marked impact on how, where and when businesses operate. Research has proven that the courses you take in high school will have a large impact on how successful you are after school. Today's employers, college and university officials are sending a clear message - it's the courses that matter.

Did You Know?

  • As many as 70 percent of the jobs you will apply for after high school may not have yet been created
  • That only 17 percent of job applicants can be placed in jobs because so many lack the necessary basic education skills required in today's labor market (Center for State Scholars)
  • That the United States may face a shortage of 12 million college-educated workers in the next decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • That 7 out of 10 students graduate from high school without completing the courses needed to succeed in college or the workplace (U.S. Department of Education)

Would You Like To?

  • Maximize your earning potential
  • Know that you have more options in choosing a career
  • Be better prepared for college courses
  • Have the foundation that businesses want in employees

Become a part of a growing movement that will better prepare you for success after high school not matter what route you choose - college, vocational school, the military or work. It's the Kentucky Scholars Program.

KENTUCKY SCHOLARS QUICK FACTS
The Partnership for Successful Schools, an organization dedicated to engaging every aspect of a community in its own education improvement initiatives, was awarded the federal funding that makes the Kentucky Scholars Program possible in 2003 by the Center for State Scholars in Austin, Texas.

What's a Scholars Program?
The Scholars program pairs business and community representatives with classes of eighth and ninth grade students as they prepare to select the courses they will take throughout high school. Through classroom presentations, students hear first-hand what qualities today's employers will expect them to have in a rapidly changing workplace and what courses will matter most should they head on to college.

Why a Scholars Program?
The scholars program is based on a similar program begun in Texas about 12 years ago after discussions between business and education leaders revealed that graduating high school students were not as prepared as they might be for the more competitive world of work and changing college environments.

And, they found that research demonstrated a significant correlation between the types of courses high school students take and success after school. Through the Center for State Scholars, the program has since grown to include twelve states across America.

Why Now, Why Kentucky?
Through the Partnership, Kentucky was awarded federal funding to launch this program in five pilot districts that included Pike, Jessamine, Fayette, Kenton and Daviess Counties. At present, the Partnership is expanding the initiative to multiple districts across Kentucky.
